ON THE TRAIL OF THE ITALIA AIRSHIP AND THE GREAT POLAR EXPLORERS

Imagine a land at the edge of the world. Covered by 75% ice and 25% earth and rocks. The last human bastion before the North Pole. Just over 2500 people and over 4000 polar bears live in its 61 thousand square kilometers.

Welcome to Svalbard Islands.

Welcome to the edge of the world.

Our journey will begin in Longyearbyen, the capital of the Svalbard Islands and starting point of our sailing trip to discover the western Spitzbergen archipelago.

FOLLOW THE PROGRAM DAY BY DAY

  • ARRIVAL IN LONGYEARBYEN

Arrive in Longyearbyen according to your flight schedule and meet your FRAMTours guides. Followed by a private transfer to your hotel and an introductory briefing about the trip. Overnight stay in a 4-star hotel in Longyearbyen in a double room, with a light dinner included. Planned hotel: Radisson Blu Polar

  • LONGYEARBYEN - START OF THE CRUISE

After breakfast, enjoy a short tour of Longyearbyen and admission to the Polar Exploration Museum and/or the University of Svalbard. After the visit, you'll have free time. At 2:00 PM, private transfer to the port and boarding the MV Togo. After checking into your cabins, there will be a further briefing on safety and life on board. Dinner on board while sailing in the Isfjorden. This will be your first opportunity to spot local wildlife. Late in the evening, we'll reach Poolepynten, which is normally home to a large colony of walruses. Weather permitting, we'll make our first disembarkation to admire these beautiful animals up close, as clumsy on land as they are agile in the water. We'll spend the night sailing north.

  • WEST SPITZBERGEN NATIONAL PARK CRUISE

The day begins with a beautiful awakening in the Magdalenfjorden, where we'll make a stunning descent to the Gravneset Peninsula. Here, we'll visit the remains of an ancient Dutch whaling site before returning aboard and continuing north. In the afternoon, we'll visit the site of Virgohamna, perhaps the most important socio-cultural site in the entire archipelago, from which countless expeditions to the North Pole have departed since the late 19th century. In the late afternoon, we'll set sail north, reaching the 80th parallel north and Moffen Island, where we'll have the opportunity to see one of the world's northernmost walrus colonies, before ending our day by reaching Heclahamna on the east coast.

  • EAST COAST AND ARCTIC SEA ICE

Today we will visit a very small portion of the east coast at the entrance to Hinlopet Street. Here, sea and weather permitting, we will make two shore excursions at Crozier Point and Kinnvika, respectively very important to the archipelago's history of polar expeditions and polar hunting. In the late afternoon, we will gradually begin our return south. Before that happens, we will attempt to head north, attempting to reach the Arctic sea ice near 81°N.

  • KONGSFJORDEN AND NY-ÅLESUND

Today we'll dedicate ourselves exclusively to visiting Kongsfjorden, perhaps one of the most beautiful in the entire archipelago. We'll wake up at Blomstranhavøya, right at the mouth of Kongsfjorden, where we'll disembark at Ny-London, a major Northern Exploration Company mineral extraction site since the early 20th century. Before visiting the international research center in Ny-Ålesund, which will take place in the late afternoon, we'll take a beautiful and relaxing cruise through Kongsfjorden, where we'll try to get as close as possible to the glaciers for a unique front-line view. This will also be the perfect opportunity to admire Ossian-Sarsfjellet, where thousands of seabirds nest. From a major coal mining site in the early 20th century and the departure point for the expeditions of Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile (with the airships Norge and Italia, respectively), to one of the most cutting-edge international scientific research centers on the Arctic environment, Ny-Ålesund is certainly a must-see destination in Svalbard. In the late afternoon, we will head south to the town of Longyearbyen. A three-course captain's farewell dinner and final farewells.

  • RETURN TO LONGYEARBYEN

The city of Longyearbyen greets us as we wake after a night at sea. After breakfast in the morning, we disembark and enjoy a private transfer to our hotel. After days spent in the wilderness, Longyearbyen will appear before our eyes like a vast metropolis. Final farewells from the guides and crew. In the afternoon, free time for shopping and/or optional excursions in the city. Possible transfer to the airport based on your flight schedule.

The MV Togo is no ordinary ship: it's a travel company with a soul. Originally a sturdy fishing vessel in the North Sea, she was transformed into an elegant expedition yacht, retaining her robust and authentic character. Today, at 31 meters long, she combines the solidity of her past with modern comfort, offering a unique experience for those seeking the essence of exploration. On board, you'll find welcoming cabins with private bathrooms, a mahogany salon reminiscent of maritime tales, and spacious outdoor decks from which to observe whales, fjords, and icebergs stretching to the horizon.
This isn't a luxury cruise with thousands of passengers, but an intimate journey in small groups, where every route is charted by nature and every day holds surprises. Home-cooked meals by the onboard chef will be enjoyed in the main salon, amidst a well-stocked library of polar literature. Daily life on board is exciting yet relaxed. Each morning, after a hearty breakfast, we'll plan our day's activities, share life experiences over a hot tea, and hold our binoculars as we observe wildlife. There will be numerous chances of spotting local fauna such as walruses, bearded seals, minke whales, beluga whales, and, if we're very lucky, even the King of the Arctic: the polar bear.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: The excursion includes several landings along the entire route, some of which (ranging in length from 500 m to 6 km) feature relatively manageable gradients. We may encounter ice, snow, mud, or other conditions. Temperatures may vary by several degrees, between 1°C and 12°C. We therefore recommend dressing appropriately. The program is subject to change based on weather and ice conditions. NOTE: During landings, our arctic guides will carry all necessary safety and polar bear protection gear. Therefore, please follow the guides' instructions carefully.
